Managing your Toddlers Behaviour

Making your toddler behave nicely is a full time job for parents. Toddlers find life quite frustrating at times as they cannot always get their own way and often cannot understand the logic behind their parents actions. Also they do not have the vocabulary necessary to stop other children and adults annoying them, and so they tend to have tantrums, bite, fight and show all kinds of interesting behaviour patterns. Bear in mind that there are ways of making life easier for yourself and most tantrums can be avoided or at least minimised by being one step ahead of your child at all times, and by avoiding doing the things that are going to annoy them most at times when they are either tired or hungry (this works also for husbands, they are more cooperative if you make sure you feed them before taking them shopping!!)

The main ways of stopping tantrums in their tracks are:-
Distracting them. If you manage to get them to look at something else, they will often forget what they were upset about in the first place. If this doesn’t work try removing them from the situation if at all possible, or by calmly reassuring them that you will soon be off the bus/ out of the supermarket and that you might be able to take them to the park/ read them a story if they stop having a tantrum. Once they have calmed down sufficiently you can discuss with them a different way of getting their own way or dealing with the problem so that they understand how to solve the problem another time in a better way. Whilst you may think its a bit daft having such a conversation with a small child, it will eventually sink in and you will get them to understand that good behaviour brings positive results not bad behaviour. If you see another child having a tantrum because he or she cant get her own way it may be worth discussing with your child what the other child might have tried doing instead (little children are brilliant at coming up with their own solutions to problems if you present it in this way)
